It mixes the vertical lift of helicopters with the forward efficiency of fixed-wing aircraft. A landmark moment for the S4 took place on April 22, 2025, when test pilot James “Buddy” Denham nailed the first human-piloted transition flight. This flight included a vertical takeoff, a shift to horizontal flight, and a vertical landing, proving that the S4’s single propulsion system can pull off multiple maneuvers. What sets this approach apart is the promise of a more reliable system thanks to its simpler mechanics.

Shortly after, two more pilots carried out similar test flights at Joby’s facility in Marina, California. These flights were done using production models built for commercial service, highlighting that the S4 is nearly ready for the real world.

New Tech and Market Plans

The electric propulsion tech powering the S4 shares similarities with what you’d see in Tesla vehicles. This shift towards electric transport marks a big change in how we get around. Joby Aviation is working on getting Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and FAA inspectors will actually fly the S4 to check that it meets safety standards.

Looking forward, Joby is eyeing Dubai as one of its first markets by mid-2025. This makes sense given Dubai’s reputation for embracing new tech and its drive to lower carbon emissions with innovative transport ideas.

Safety is a top priority at Joby. They’ve run thousands of ground tests and simulated emergency scenarios to make sure the S4 can handle all kinds of situations. Impressively, the aircraft is designed to stay airborne even if two of its six propellers fail—a real testament to its sturdy design.

Since 2017, Joby has logged over 39,768 miles of unmanned test flights, and the recent human-piloted tests mark an exciting turning point for sustainable city travel. As urban areas tackle traffic jams and pollution issues, innovations like the S4 promise a faster, cleaner, and smarter way to commute. With steady progress in air mobility tech, Joby Aviation is on track to change how we think about getting around in the city, bringing flying taxis one step closer to everyday life.
